The sounds of space fighters blowing each other out of the universe assured Brandie that all was well in hers. Yeah, except Granny would skin you alive for letting him spend so much time on the X-Box. He should be outside playing.
As if Dylan could read her thoughts, the house plunged into blissful, if terrifying, silence. He appeared in the doorway. “Can I go walk around again? Maybe all the team kids are home today.”
“Team kids?”
Dylan dragged a toe toward the doorway. “You know, kids who aren’t home on weekends because they spend all their time playing on soccer teams and softball teams and swim teams—”
“Do you want to be on a team?” Brandie choked down her panic and tried again. “I was thinking scouts in the fall, but…”
“Nah. I just thought maybe someone would be home now—someone who’s gonna be in my new class.”
How could she argue with that? “Sure. Go ahead. Just don’t be out too long, and don’t go in anyone’s house.” She dug through her purse and brought out her Granny’s cellphone—complete with purple sparkly case. “Take this. Might as well use it before they shut it off on Monday. Call me if—for anything.”
Doubts pummeled her from every angle. “Maybe…”
Dylan shoved the phone into his shorts pocket and dashed out the door. “See you!”
Piles of boxes suggested she’d made her first mistake in letting him go. Brandie shut that thought down. No, Jack from across the street was right. I shouldn’t have paid Jefe so much. But if I didn’t, Angelica would have told the whole family that I didn’t pay what I agreed to, and it would have been a mess. A huge one.
No matter how she looked at it, keeping the peace mattered—a lot. And they’ll be eager to help if I need it. They’ll think they can get paid too much, too. The memory of Jack and Rudy helping her return the U-Haul in time gave her gut a good churning. He didn’t even do that much. Maybe I am a pushover. And now things will be even tighter until payday.
The front door creaked as Dylan entered, and Brandie called out, “Hey, kid. I thought you were going to check out the neighborhood.”
Dylan reached for his X-Box controller again. “Nah. No kids. Just a bunch of old people everywhere. That guy Rudy was watching me, too.” He gave her a curious look. “Think he’s a creep?”
“Nah. I think he’s just lonely.” She started to tell him not to go over there alone, but the idea of killing his innocence with unfounded suspicions stopped her. “Still, make sure I know if you go over. I don’t want to run all over the neighborhood looking for you when you’re right there.”
“And tell you if he does anything creepy. I know. Grammy taught me all about that.”
The TV kicked on, and noise filled the living room again. Brandie couldn’t take it. “Turn it off!”
Dylan punched the button and stared at her. “Wha—?”
“Sorry. I didn’t mean to yell.
